Internment Camp Carved Wooden Blue Jay Bird Pin
$175.00
Beautifully carved wooden blue jay. It has twisted wire legs and is perched on a branch. It’s mouth is open, which isn’t very common with these type of birds. It is hand-painted in white, blue, periwinkle, gray and black and with a lot of nice detail, and then heavily lacquered. Although this bird is not one of the Takahashi birds that are the most famous of the birds that were carved in the internment camps, it is a bird from an internment camp. These bird pins were actually carved in all 10 of the internment camps during the early to mid 1940s, but most were not signed. This pin is signed on the back in red with what looks like “IH” or “HI”. The pinback has 2 prongs that are imbedded in the wood on the back of the bird. The safety clasp is in good working condition. The pin measures 2-5/8″ x1″. This bird is absolutely beautiful and a very important part of American-Japanese history that seems to be forgotten by many.
